Though it can often feel impossible, waking up early has its perks. Early risers enjoy quiet mornings, productive routines, and a head start on the day.
Recent research by Avocado Green Mattress, conducted by Talker Research, found that 38% of Americans are “bad” in the mornings, and respondents get out of bed later than planned an average of eight times per month.
Although it may seem like some people are born as “morning people”, whilst others struggle to get out of bed, did you know that location can play a significant role?
Whether it's consistent weather, safe neighborhoods for a sunrise jog, or access to gyms that open before 6 AM, the state you live in can greatly impact how motivated you are to get up and go!
To determine where early risers truly thrive in the US, sleep experts at the wooden bed manufacturer, Get Laid Beds have examined key factors, including:
Scott Shields, CEO of Get Laid Beds, added:
"Your environment can either support or sabotage your routines just as much as your sleep habits. To stay consistent with their productive routines, early risers need safe, accessible, and motivating conditions, factors all impacted by where you live."
Wyoming comes out on top of all fifty states with a total score of 153, making it the number one best state for early risers!
It offers an excellent balance for early birds, with just 100 days of rain annually and an average sunrise time of 5:26 AM, making it perfect for getting up and out the door. While its safety score is somewhat average, it is home to 102 gyms that open before 6 AM, giving morning people all the essentials to get moving.
In second place is Arizona, where early mornings are made even easier by its dry climate, with just 36 rainy days a year. The sunrise time averages around 5:18 AM, and although the gym's availability ranks lower than other states in the top 10, its overall safety score and consistent weather help boost its score to a strong 148.
Colorado takes third place, known for its residents' active, outdoorsy lifestyle. The state offers only 89 days of rain and a sunrise time of around 5:32 AM. Strong access to early-opening gyms and a moderate safety score make it ideal for those who like to fit in a run or workout before work.
In fourth place is Montana, which performs exceptionally well on safety, ranking the highest of all states in that category. With 95 rainy days and a 5:34 AM sunrise, its peaceful, secure environment and natural surroundings offer a calm and productive start to the day despite limited early morning gym access compared to other states.
Rounding out the top five is Nevada, which has a total score of 141. Unsurprisingly, the state has the fewest rainy days of all states in the US, at just 26 per year. Although it falls short in gym accessibility and safety score, the dry climate, with a sunrise time of 5:33 AM and spacious landscapes, make it a strong contender for those who like to rise with the sun.
At the other end of the spectrum, the lowest-ranking states for early risers are generally characterised by late sunrise times, high rainfall, low safety scores, and limited access to early-morning gyms. These factors can make it more challenging for people who prefer to start their day before the rest of the world wakes up.
Kentucky ranks at the very bottom with a total score of just 46. Despite having a relatively average number of rainy days, it has one of the latest average sunrise times at 6:16 AM, and there is minimal access to the gym before 6 AM. Only 10 gyms open early across the state, and while its safety score is mid-range, it's simply not enough to support a lifestyle geared toward early starts.
Similarly, Pennsylvania also performs poorly with 152 rainy days each year, and mornings are often gloomy or wet, which doesn't pair well with an early rising routine. The state also ranks low on safety and gym accessibility, making it harder for early birds to stay consistent with morning runs or workouts. Michigan follows closely behind with a score of 61. It shares similar rainy days with Pennsylvania, experiences late sunrises, and has limited gym access. The state also has a moderately low safety score, which may lower its appeal to morning people.
Interestingly, Indiana and Florida are tied at fifth place with a score of 65, but for different reasons. Indiana has one of the latest sunrises in the country at 6:16 AM, and it offers little in terms of safety. However, it does have an impressive 192 gyms open before 6 AM, which helps the state avoid the bottom spot on the list. On the other hand, Florida experiences a lot of sun but ranks last in terms of sunrise time, with the sun rising as late as 6:35 AM. With modest safety scores and limited gym access, it's not ideal for those who like getting up and moving early.
In response to the research, Sam Sadighi, founder of Easy Sleep Solutions and our in-house sleep expert, has shared her expert advice to help Americans optimize their morning wake-up routine for a more productive day:
"Hydrate, ideally with around 500ml of water. We lose a lot of fluid overnight through breathing and sweating, so hydrating first thing in the morning is really important. Dehydration causes havoc with our sleep, as does drinking too much fluid close to bedtime, so starting your intake early is a good idea."
"Expose yourself to bright light, ideally by going outside as close to getting up as possible. Morning light's hue is in the blue spectrum, which is what our brains expect to see in the morning, so it will help set your circadian rhythm (body clock). Even on a cloudy day, getting outside and being exposed to natural daylight is much more effective at setting your circadian rhythm than simply turning on indoor lights or opening the curtains, as windows tend to distort the potency of the light."
"Get up when you wake up; don't keep hitting snooze! As tempting as it can be to keep doing so, for most people, hitting snooze will make them feel sluggish. If you're someone who always presses snooze while your alarm's set for 7 AM, but you don't get up until 7:30 AM, set your alarm for 7:30 AM. It will help you get better quality sleep rather than interrupted sleep."
"Consider your alarm clock's volume too. Ideally, it will be loud enough to wake you but not so jarring it will panic you!"
